Fortnite adds AI-powered NPCs for creators
Epic Games is expanding creator tools in Fortnite with a new feature called conversations, which lets island builders add AI-driven characters that can engage players in unscripted dialogue. Instead of crafting exhaustive dialogue trees, creators now define who a character is — how they think, what they know, and how they behave — with simple prompts and pick a voice to match.
That shift makes it faster and easier for creators to populate islands with responsive NPCs that can serve as quest givers, narrators, shopkeepers, or environmental storytellers. Because the characters can react in real time, player interactions can feel more natural and emergent, boosting immersion across millions of Fortnite players and creator-made experiences.
Creators will find the tool useful for a wide range of uses: guiding new players through tutorials, animating story-driven adventures, or creating social hubs with memorable personalities. The 'conversations' approach streamlines development and invites more creators to experiment with narrative and gameplay design without heavy scripting.
Epic says it will apply safeguards and usage guidelines to keep interactions appropriate and prevent misuse, building on lessons from earlier AI experiments in Fortnite. Overall, the new capability is a positive step toward richer, more creative player experiences and empowers the community to bring more living stories to life in Fortnite.
