Google and Volvo bring Gemini's vision to the road
Google announced at I/O that its Gemini assistant will be able to access external cameras on the upcoming Volvo EX60 SUV to interpret parking signs and other roadside cues. Because Volvo is using Google’s embedded Android Automotive platform, the assistant can be tightly integrated with vehicle sensors to provide real-time explanations about surroundings.
The initial, practical use case is simple but impactful: drivers can ask Gemini to translate or clarify confusing parking signs. That helps reduce uncertainty, avoid tickets, and makes urban driving less stressful — especially in areas with complicated, time-limited, or hard-to-read signage.
Beyond parking, this camera-enabled capability opens the door to richer in-car assistance: recalling a road sign the car just passed, explaining temporary restrictions, or offering contextual alerts based on what the vehicle's exterior cameras see. These features can boost safety and accessibility by giving drivers clearer, immediate information without manual searching.
What this means for drivers — early adopters of the EX60 will get a smarter, more context-aware in-car assistant that leverages real world sensors. As automakers and AI platforms continue to collaborate, expect more vehicle-integrated assistants that turn cameras and sensors into practical everyday helpers for millions of drivers.
