Google is bringing its conversational Gemini AI assistant to Apple CarPlay through Google Maps, extending a feature that previously arrived on Android Auto. The launch gives more drivers access to natural voice-based navigation support directly from their car display.
The big win: drivers can now ask more complex, multi-step questions without needing to tap through menus. For example, someone could ask for recommendations on places to visit, then follow up by asking Gemini to navigate there while avoiding toll roads.
Smarter, hands-free help on the road
By making navigation more conversational, Gemini can reduce friction in everyday driving tasks. Instead of rigid voice commands, users can speak more naturally, which may help them stay focused on the road while still getting useful route and destination information.
- Available now for US CarPlay users, with global rollout in progress.
- Works inside Google Maps on Apple CarPlay.
- Supports hands-free destination discovery and route adjustments.
This is an incremental but meaningful expansion of AI into everyday mobility. By bringing Gemini to CarPlay, Google is making advanced voice assistance available to a wider group of drivers across both major in-car platforms.
