Google makes switching AIs easier with new import tools
Google is rolling out two desktop features for Gemini — Import Memory and Import Chat History — that help users bring what another AI already knows about them into Gemini. The Import Memory flow guides users to paste a suggested prompt into their old assistant, copy that assistant’s output, and paste it into Gemini so Gemini can quickly catch up on preferences and context.
The Import Chat History option supports bulk migration: users request an export of their conversations from their previous AI and upload that export into Gemini. Together, these tools let people preserve ongoing projects, personal preferences, and conversational context without rebuilding everything from scratch.
These features put control in users’ hands, making it easier to choose the assistant that best fits their needs while keeping continuity. They also encourage competition and interoperability in the AI ecosystem — as more providers offer easy ways to move memories and data, users benefit from better portability and less vendor lock-in.
Rolling out on desktop, Gemini’s import tools are a practical win for everyday AI users who want a smoother transition between assistants and a more consistent, personalized experience across platforms.
