A Big Step for Local AI on Macs
Meta has introduced Muse Spark Open, an open-weight AI model the company describes as its most capable U.S. open-weight release so far. Notably, Meta says the model can run on a desktop setup using two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios and the latest version of Apple’s MLX framework.
The launch is especially interesting because Meta and Apple, often seen as major tech rivals, worked together to support the model’s performance on Apple hardware. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg credited Apple collaboration for helping Muse Spark Open run well on new Mac Studios, while Apple leadership publicly congratulated the teams involved.
This is a win for the broader AI ecosystem because it points toward a future where powerful models are not limited to large cloud clusters. If advanced open-weight models can run effectively on high-end desktop machines, researchers, startups, and independent developers may gain more control, privacy, and flexibility in how they build with AI.
- Open-weight access: Developers can inspect and adapt the model more freely than closed systems.
- Mac optimization: Apple’s MLX framework helps bring serious AI workloads to local hardware.
- Industry collaboration: Meta and Apple working together could accelerate practical AI tooling for creators and researchers.
