Microsoft has opened preorders for its Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact Nvidia-powered workstation designed for AI developers. Priced at about $5,999 and expected to ship in November, the system brings high-end AI development capabilities into a desk-friendly form factor.
The Dev Box runs on Nvidia’s Arm-based RTX Spark platform and includes 128GB of unified memory, giving developers room to work with demanding AI models and applications locally. Nvidia Tensor cores and a 100-watt thermal envelope make it a serious option for prototyping, testing, and accelerating AI workflows outside the cloud.
Why it matters
- More local AI power: Developers can experiment with advanced AI workloads directly on their own hardware.
- Compact design: The flat anodized aluminum chassis doubles as a heatsink, blending performance with efficient industrial design.
- Expanding AI hardware options: Microsoft’s entry adds another pathway for builders who want dedicated AI compute in a small desktop system.
While the price reflects the premium hardware market and ongoing component cost pressures, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is a positive sign for AI builders: powerful local development systems are becoming a more visible part of the AI ecosystem.
