Microsoft’s latest Surface and Windows event highlighted a growing push toward AI-powered personal computing. The headline announcement was the Surface Laptop Ultra, a new machine built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark Arm-based chip and designed for users who want more AI capability directly on their device.
The Surface Laptop Ultra will start at $2,599 with an 8-core CPU, 24GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage, with availability beginning October 16th. Microsoft also introduced a notable hardware improvement: built-in magnetic USB-C charging, moving away from the proprietary Surface Connect charging port.
New tools for AI developers
For builders, Microsoft also opened preorders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact developer-focused PC priced at $5,999 and expected to ship in November. This gives AI developers another option for experimenting with advanced models and AI workflows in a dedicated desktop form factor.
Smarter Windows experiences
On the software side, Microsoft previewed new Windows Copilot capabilities, including “Hybrid Intelligence” features that can use files stored on a PC to help take actions. A refreshed Windows search experience will also let users perform quick actions directly from the search bar, pointing toward a more responsive and useful AI-assisted operating system.
- Why it matters: AI features are moving from cloud-only tools into everyday devices.
- Who benefits: Developers, creators, and power users gain more capable local AI hardware.
- Positive impact: Smarter Windows integrations could make routine computing tasks faster and more intuitive.
