Microsoft launches Project Solara to power agent-first gadgets
Project Solara is Microsoft’s new operating system designed specifically to run AI agents on dedicated devices. Announced at Build 2026, Solara is described as “a new platform built from the ground up to power agent-driven experiences.” Rather than layering on Windows, Microsoft built Solara on Android — a choice that should help device makers and developers move faster by reusing existing mobile tooling and drivers.
Microsoft showed two concept devices to illustrate Solara’s possibilities. The desk concept resembles an Echo Show: a shared display that can unlock with facial recognition and hand off access to personalized AI agents. The badge concept is a wearable access badge equipped with a camera and fingerprint scanner that can wake or summon an agent tied to the wearer. Both demos highlight persistent, secure, and context-aware agent interactions that feel native to hardware.
By creating an OS aimed at agent workflows, Microsoft is making it easier to embed AI assistants into everyday devices — from workplace badges to dedicated home screens and beyond. Developers gain a clear target for building agent-enabled apps, and hardware partners get an OS that prioritizes privacy-conscious authentication and seamless agent handoffs.
Why it matters: Project Solara signals a shift toward purpose-built software for AI-first devices. While the initiative is still early and shown via concepts, the combination of agent-centric design and Android compatibility could speed real-world deployments.
