A major filmmaker experiments with AI video
Neill Blomkamp, known for films like District 9 and Gran Turismo, has unveiled Nightborne, a 13-minute sci-fi short produced through his new AI startup and production company, Barley Studios.
The short is notable because every shot was made with ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0 text-to-video generator. The project also features characters whose faces and voices are modeled after human actors, offering a glimpse at how future productions may combine traditional performance, direction, and generative tools.
Blomkamp described Nightborne as a test of what generative AI can do and suggested he is interested in eventually tackling a full feature using similar methods. Even amid debate over quality and creative implications, the release marks a real-world experiment from an established director rather than a simple tech demo.
