AI music creation gets a more artist-friendly model
Spotify’s upcoming AI-powered remix and covers product is gaining momentum with the addition of Merlin, a major digital rights agency representing more than 30,000 independent labels and distributors. The move expands the project beyond major-label participation and signals growing interest in AI tools that respect artist choice and rights.
The paid product will allow fans to create AI-generated covers and remixes of participating artists’ music. Importantly, Spotify says artists will need to opt in, receive proper credit, and be compensated when their music is used.
That structure is the key win: instead of treating AI music as a free-for-all, Spotify is building toward a licensed, permission-based model that can support both fan creativity and creator earnings.
- Fans get new ways to interact with songs they love.
- Artists and labels retain control over participation.
- Rights holders can benefit from a new paid AI music format.
With both Merlin and Universal Music Group involved, Spotify’s effort could become an important test case for how AI-generated music experiences can be built collaboratively with the music industry rather than around it.
