YouTube makes listening to podcasts smoother with new Premium features
YouTube is taking steps to improve podcast listening with a pair of Premium features designed for people who consume long-form audio while on the move. Android users will see the changes first, with an iOS rollout planned for later. The additions are small but meaningful refinements that make YouTube more competitive with dedicated podcast apps.
On-the-go mode shifts the experience to an audio-first layout: larger, simplified playback buttons, a single still image replacing the video, and a visible timeline with video chapters. YouTube will prompt the mode if it detects you’re moving, and you can also enable it manually from a video’s settings. The design reduces distraction and makes control easier when commuting or multitasking.
Auto speed helps listeners get through episodes faster by automating playback rate adjustments. For frequent listeners who speed up shows, this feature saves the friction of constantly changing speed and helps manage listening time more effectively.
Though these features are initially Premium-only, they mark a positive direction for YouTube as a platform for long-form audio. By simplifying playback and adding smart convenience tools, YouTube is making podcast listening more practical for everyday routines—and signaling that it wants to be a serious option for creators and listeners alike.
