AI Browser Picker: ChatGPT Atlas vs Comet vs Gemini in Chrome (2026)
ChatGPT Atlas was retired in August 2026, so the best alternative for most people is Comet: a full AI browser that is free on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, with its Comet Assistant agent on Perplexity Pro or Max. Gemini in Chrome and Edge Copilot add AI to browsers you may already use, but their agents (Chrome auto browse, Browse with Copilot) are limited to paid US plans; OpenAI's own replacement is the ChatGPT desktop app plus browser extension.

Privacy settings to check on day one
Check what you have allowed: With your permission, Copilot can use your browsing history and long-term memory; Journeys groups your history into topics once you turn it on.
Find where to view and delete AI memories or chat history, and clear anything you don't want kept.
Before you run Browse with Copilot, check which sites it may use and whether it asks before purchases or form submits.
Keep a non-AI browser profile (or another browser) for banking and health sites.
Agent mode safety
Web pages can hide instructions that try to trick an agent (prompt injection). Watch what the agent does and stop it if it goes off task.
Use a separate browser profile, or stay logged out, when an agent works near sensitive accounts.
Never let an agent handle banking, passwords or account recovery.
Read every confirmation before a purchase, booking or payment; OpenAI says ChatGPT asks before consequential actions like these.
Turn off memory or history access for sensitive browsing, and clear agent memories you no longer want.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Atlas shut down?
Yes. OpenAI says "ChatGPT Atlas has been retired and no longer receives updates." It was retired in August 2026 (reported: retirement announced July 9, 2026; Atlas stopped working August 9, 2026.). OpenAI's replacement is the ChatGPT desktop app plus browser extension, and your ChatGPT chats and subscription are unaffected.
What happened to my Atlas bookmarks and passwords?
They did not move anywhere automatically. If you exported a bookmarks HTML file, import it in Chrome (Bookmarks and lists > Import bookmarks and settings) or Comet (Settings > Import bookmarks and settings). Import an exported password CSV into your new password manager, then delete the CSV because it holds readable passwords. Sign in to sites again, and use OpenAI's Privacy Portal to delete Atlas data.
ChatGPT Atlas vs Comet: which is better now?
Comet, because Atlas is retired and gets no updates. Comet is free on Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android, supports most Chrome extensions and imports bookmarks and passwords; its Comet Assistant needs Perplexity Pro or Max. If you want to stay with ChatGPT, use the ChatGPT desktop app and browser extension in your current browser instead.
Which AI browsers can do tasks for you (agent mode), and what do they cost?
As of October 27, 2026: Comet (Comet Assistant: Perplexity Pro or Max (monthly limits); not on the Free plan; price: see vendor); Gemini in Chrome (Chrome auto browse: Google AI Pro or Ultra, US only (preview); not in Incognito; 18+); Edge Copilot (Browse with Copilot: Microsoft 365 Premium, US only, Edge desktop; usage limits apply); ChatGPT app + extension (Browser tasks (built-in browser and extension browser control): ChatGPT desktop app; sign-in browsing in ChatGPT Work is for paid plans; availability depends on rollout; price: see vendor); Opera Neon (Neon Do and Neon agents: Neon subscription ($19.90/month)). Brave Leo and Dia have no confirmed agent mode.
Are AI browsers safe to use (prompt injection, memory)?
They are reasonably safe if you set them up carefully. Web pages can hide instructions that trick an agent (prompt injection), so watch agents work, confirm every purchase or payment, and keep banking and passwords out of agent mode. Check memory and history settings on day one: some browsers personalize from your browsing history, and Atlas memories were separate from ChatGPT memories.
